I understand that as I’m sitting down to write this article, I’m screaming into a void and hoping someone answers back. I know that by writing an article about my experiences, it won’t change some people’s minds. I may even get backlash from those around me. But I’ve always written to understand my feelings and to understand what’s happening around me, and this is no exception. I woke up on November 6, 2024, knowing deep down that something wasn’t right.

When I decided that what I wanted to do with my life was fiction writing, it felt like something had finally clicked into place. I loved writing, but I hadn’t realized that I could make a career out of doing it. When I did come to that realization, it just felt right. Going into my sophomore year (the 2024-2025 school year), I started taking my specific Fiction Writing classes. Initially, it felt great.

If you don’t know Brielle Lacroix as your FROG (First yeaR Orientation Guide) or your OPA (Orientation Peer Advisor) (like me!), then you definitely know her as the Student Body President of James Madison University. A senior Public Administration major, Brielle and student government are one and the same, making her a familiar face around JMU’s campus. Speaking with Brielle, you can see her warmth and excitement about working for and with people. It just comes naturally to her.

The conversation around trigger warnings and their use has been heavily scrutinized as of late. Many argue that the existence of trigger warnings has contributed to a hyper-sensitive, “weaker” generation of people; the kinds of people who can’t even go to the movies without needing someone to tell them what will happen. However, having trigger warnings displayed and publicly known actually helps to enhance people’s experiences in media and culture.

Even if you aren’t a fan of video games, you probably know the characters Super Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach. Pretty much every Mario game until recently followed the same tired formula: Peach gets captured by Bowser and Mario goes to save her. She was a pretty princess who wore a pink dress, baked cakes, and couldn’t do much of anything. I hated her with a passion. It killed me to hate Princess Peach so much.

The year is 2054. In a 50s-stylized futuristic America, life is fairly good for the average American person. However, the constant threat of a nuclear war does hang heavy over the minds of the people, and one company has capitalized on this fear. In ads on billboards and flashy TV commercials, a cartoon character advertises “Vault Life”, encouraging you to purchase spots in the nuclear protection vaults designed by Vault-Tec so if something does happen, you won’t be caught in the blast.
