Screened at the Armenian Film Festival London (6–8 December 2024), Shoghakat Vardanyan’s documentary 1489 (2023) is a raw, immersive, hard-to-watch debut by a talented auteur. Vardanyan collected intimate glimpses into her family’s uncertainty and grief after the disappearance of the director’s twenty-one-year-old brother who served as a soldier in Armenia’s recent war with Azerbaijan. 1489 is a haunting exploration of grief amid the unfolding tragedy of the 2020 Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) War.

ABSTRACTThis article reconstructs the forgotten friendship between Georges Bataille and the Russian émigré poet and philosopher Boris Poplavsky. Comparing their solar metaphysics, I focus on conceptions of friendship, sacrifice and depersonalisation. First, I retrace Bataille’s relationship to early Surrealis and Russian circles in interwar Paris, with a focus on his friendship with Irina Odoevtseva.

Shortly after Rachel Bespaloff’s suicide in 1949, her friend Jean Wahl published fragments from her final unfinished project. ‘The Instant and Freedom’ condensed themes that occupied the Ukrainian-French philosopher throughout her life: music, rhythm, corporeality, movement and time. One of Bespaloff’s key ideas, ‘the instant’, is less a fragment of duration than a life-changing event, a moment of embodied metamorphosis.
