    As Rick Pitino unfastened his sport coat and revealed the iconic blue, red and tan striped sweater St. John’s fans know all too well, the sold-out arena named in Lou Carnesecca’s name erupted in cheers. For “Looie,” the man who put St. John’s on the national map all those years ago, it seemed only right to don a replicated version of the iconic Carnesecca sweater at the basketball team’s Big East-Big 12 showdown against the Kansas State Wildcats on Dec. 7.

    Coming off of their first loss of the season in double-overtime to No. 12 Baylor Thursday night, St. John’s showed no remorse in a 80-55 victory over the University of Virginia (UVA). After losing an 18-point lead to the Bears, the Red Storm offense made sure of eliminating that factor early on against the Cavaliers. They jumped on top of every opportunity defensively, picking up 10 steals in the opening 20 minutes, and 13 overall. Everything was working for the Red Storm.

With the women’s basketball season rapidly approaching, the pair of guards have been thrown into the fire of collegiate basketball already, competing in their first exhibition game on Oct. 21. Hailing from South Shore High School in Brooklyn, NY, Little has experience on the big stage.

    For junior guard Skye Owen there is one expectation this year: “make it to March Madness.” As a freshman on the St. John’s Women’s Basketball team, Owen got a taste of what madness March can bring. In the 2022-23 season, led by Kadaja Bailey, Jayla Everett and current Director of Basketball Operations Danielle Patterson, the Red Storm made it through the NCAA First Four game against Purdue University before falling to No. 6 North Carolina in the first round.
