As Rick Pitino unfastened his sport coat and revealed the iconic blue, red and tan striped sweater St. John’s fans know all too well, the sold-out arena named in Lou Carnesecca’s name erupted in cheers. For “Looie,” the man who put St. John’s on the national map all those years ago, it seemed only right to don a replicated version of the iconic Carnesecca sweater at the basketball team’s Big East-Big 12 showdown against the Kansas State Wildcats on Dec. 7.

Coming off of their first loss of the season in double-overtime to No. 12 Baylor Thursday night, St. John’s showed no remorse in a 80-55 victory over the University of Virginia (UVA). After losing an 18-point lead to the Bears, the Red Storm offense made sure of eliminating that factor early on against the Cavaliers. They jumped on top of every opportunity defensively, picking up 10 steals in the opening 20 minutes, and 13 overall. Everything was working for the Red Storm.

Transitioning from high school to college athletics proves to be a struggle for incoming freshmen each year — but Janeya Grant and A’riel Little are ready for the challenge. With the women’s basketball season rapidly approaching, the pair of guards have been thrown into the fire of collegiate basketball already, competing in their first exhibition game on Oct. 21. Hailing from South Shore High School in Brooklyn, NY, Little has experience on the big stage.

For junior guard Skye Owen there is one expectation this year: “make it to March Madness.” As a freshman on the St. John’s Women’s Basketball team, Owen got a taste of what madness March can bring. In the 2022-23 season, led by Kadaja Bailey, Jayla Everett and current Director of Basketball Operations Danielle Patterson, the Red Storm made it through the NCAA First Four game against Purdue University before falling to No. 6 North Carolina in the first round.

The junior guard honed in on her competitive nature in the off-season to work on her game. With the 2024-25 St. John’s Women’s Basketball season days away, junior Tara Daye is ready to bring her competitive spirit to the court. The 5-foot-10 guard from Newark, NJ made her debut for the Red Storm last season after transferring from DePaul University following her freshman season. As a Blue Devil, she averaged 1.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and shot 42.3 percent from the floor.

Almost 24 hours after St. John’s held their annual Men’s and Women’s Basketball Media Day Head Coach Joe Tartamella has found his squad’s leaders for the 2024-25 season. Per a release from Red Storm Sports on Oct. 16, graduate guard Ber’Nyah Mayo and junior guard Jaliah Donald were selected as captains by the coaching staff and players. Mayo played in 33 games and started 32 at the Johnnies point guard position during the 2023-24 season.

St. John’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Head Coaches Rick Pitino and Joe Tartamella addressed local media on Oct. 15 in Carnesecca Arena for the annual St. John’s Media Day. The three-hour event marked the beginning of basketball season in Queens as both teams’ rosters were introduced ahead of their 2024-25 seasons. Women’s Basketball: The afternoon began with an opening statement from Tartamella who enters his 13th season as head coach of the Johnnies.

The St. John’s Women’s Volleyball team (12-3) defended home court on Sept. 28 against the Seton Hall Pirates (6-6) in their first Big East match of the season. The Johnnies entered the match 4-0 in their non-conference slate after defeating Fairfield and sweeping Iona, LIU and Bryant in the 10th Annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic. Erin Jones continued her monsterous junior year campaign with 16 kills, 18 digs and a 36.7 percent clip, leading to 19 definitive points for the Red Storm.

The St. John’s Women’s Volleyball team defeated the Fairfield University Stags in a thrilling five-set comeback in Carnesecca Arena on Sept. 18. The team improves to 8-3 on the season and 5-0 at home. The Johnnies started the match dominantly — jumping to a 6-2 lead off of three kills from senior outside hitter Giorgia Walther. She kept that pace throughout the game and completed with a season-best of 28 kills on the night.
