A third of pubs, bars, restaurants and hotels are losing money and at risk of failure because of the government’s recent tax rises, the industry has warned. One in three hospitality businesses is operating at a loss following the £3.4 billion in additional costs that hit the sector in April, according to a new industry survey. The 11 percentage-point increase is the steepest quarterly rise recorded by the industry in recent years.

The outlook for Britain’s private sector has deteriorated to its weakest level in nearly three years as companies struggle with rising wage costs and global trade uncertainty. A weighted balance of minus 30 per cent of private sector businesses expect activity to fall in the three months to August, according to the CBI’s latest “growth indicator”. That marks the lowest reading since September 2022 and a further decline from the minus 26 per cent recorded in the three months to May.

The boss of Aldi GB has criticised Britain’s slow-moving planning system, saying that the complex process and “spurious” objections from competitor supermarkets were stifling shop openings and job creation. Giles Hurley, chief executive of the German-owned discounter’s UK arm, said that what was once a relatively straightforward 12-week planning process to open shops had become a two-to-three-year ordeal, slowing down Aldi’s ambitions to grow its UK network.
