The John Lewis Partnership is increasing the opportunity for dining and drinking in its shops in an attempt to boost footfall and reclaim its position as middle England’s favourite retailer. The group is to open five more cafés and restaurants this year, which it said reflected the “growing importance of food and drink” to its department store strategy.

Next has raised its annual profit guidance for the second time in two months after unusually warm UK weather boosted sales in the first quarter. The clothing and home retailer, which recently surpassed £1 billion in profit for the first time, said warmer weather over the past three months had “benefited the sale of summer-weight clothing”. Full-price sales rose by 11.4 per cent in the 13 weeks to April 26, compared with the same period last year.
