The downtown 1 train is skipping all stops between 145th Street and 96th Street this and next weekend, according to a MTA sign posted outside of the 110th Street and Broadway station. This disruption is due to “station improvements,” according to the MTA sign. The trains will skip these stops from Friday at 9:45 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m. between Oct. 11-14 and Oct. 18-21. The MTA’s website only has disruptions listed for this weekend.

Workers across all three Hex & Co. locations are encouraging customers to pledge to boycott if the owners of the board game café do not meet union demands. The pledge comes over nine months after Hex & Co. workers unionized, but remain without an agreement on a union contract. Hex & Co., the Brooklyn Strategist, and the Uncommons, all individually or co-owned by Gregory May and Jon Freeman, unionized to form Tabletop Workers United in December 2023.

History books say the soldier-led 1857 rebellion ignited India’s fight for independence. Not everyone agrees. The year 1857 in India began with some wild rumors. The British had issued a new gun to their Indian soldiers, an Enfield musket. But these guns required special cartridges, which soldiers had to bite to activate. That wouldn’t have been a problem, except people were convinced that animal fat greased the cartridges, namely beef tallow and pork lard.

Burman opens the song “Duniya Mein Logon Ko” (1972) in his characteristically guttural voice. Enter a guitar riff, a Rajesh Khanna in a red suit, and a blonde Mumtaz, and you can witness Panchamda’s magic. Over 35 years later, you hear it again in Timbaland’s “I Love Them Girls” (2007). You’ll also hear another one of his songs, “Dum Maro Dum” (1971), in Apple’s iPhone 13 ad.
