And as such, the results do not paint a pretty picture for Sir Keir Starmer and his Labour Government. Ploughing on regardless could prove dangerous for Labour. But at the same time, it cannot afford a Parliament of inaction. To an extent, the Government’s approach is understandable. Fix the issues that it inherited, especially when it comes to balancing the books, and then look at delivering change for the better.

The key term there being good businesses. The water industry is clearly awash with competence. The fact that there isn’t a water company with the begging bowl out suggests that it isn’t a case of just one bad apple but the whole rotten barrel. No one should begrudge a business doing its job rewarding its executives and shareholders. But the water companies have made a mockery of any goodwill customers would have had towards them.

It suggests that Reform UK would be on course to win the most seats with no party close to an overall majority if an election were held imminently. Labour could lose 246 MPs, including 10 Cabinet ministers, with major losses in the so-called red wall, Scotland and the Welsh Valleys. Based on polling of more than 16,000 people, the data suggests a potential fracturing of the vote that could reshape the electoral map.

The Northumberland Line opened in December after being shut for 60 years but so far only half the six stations are in operation. The line between Ashington and Newcastle gets especially busy during Newcastle United match days. Perhaps policymakers can have a word with all the football clubs around our region, see what they have to say. I’m sure someone like Leeds United would welcome better connectivity. This £298m project shows that there is a demand for rail travel in this country.

But Sir Keir Starmer’s visit to a carpet factory in Huddersfield last week put daylight between him and the Tories. While Rishi Sunak was known to fly to different parts of the country on a government-funded helicopter, even when he was coming to make an announcement about public transport, Sir Keir took the train last Friday.
