Acclaimed ballet dancers Fumi Kaneko and Vadim Muntagirov have left rehearsal to sit down for an interview in a small, nondescript office in a warren of rooms backstage at the Royal Opera House. Fumi’s ensemble may be ‘dancer off duty’ in a zip-up sweater and her pointe shoes protected by pink wrinkly paper boots, but there are clues to her position as the Royal Ballet company’s prima ballerina.

‘Breathtaking’ is overused, but no other word so perfectly captures my reaction to walking into my hotel room at The Silo in Cape Town. I was prepared to be wowed - my taxi driver told me it was the city’s best hotel on the way over - and yes, the gleaming marble, six-foot tall headboard, clawfoot bathtub complete with Penhaligon's goodies, were all gloriously luxe, but it was the hexagonal floor-to-ceiling windows that floored me.

The Chelsea Flower Show - that jamboree of soil, plants and flowers which heralds the beginning of the London social season - always attracts an eclectic mix of royalty, social figures, television stars and, some might say incongruous, celebrities to SW3 to gasp in wonder at gorgeous gardens. This year was no exception.

Princess Diana, just 27 years old, watches transfixed as Elton John performs Candle in the Wind at the London Palladium in an extraordinary piece of footage. She is seated next to the then-Prince of Wales in the Royal Box, rapt as her friend sings the song that would become inextricably linked with her own tragic passing. I feel sorry for the many talented journalists who work for Reach but surely it's clear that this 'press giant' is headed for obliteration? Mainly due to factors outside its control but moronic policies like this will speed up the demise

Regional press giant Reach has launched a drive to increase story counts across its titles, Holdthefrontpage reports. It reports on an email, sent by a senior Reach editor, suggests reporters should be writing EIGHT stories per shift https://t.co/EJYEbCwk0M

I cannot believe David has gone. I studied with him at City and he became a true friend. He was the kindest, gentlest, most decent of our cohort and had so much more to give. He really lived and loved and did great work - his reporting on Ukraine led the field. A terrible loss.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our colleague, David Knowles. David was a talented journalist and a much-loved friend and a colleague. He will be greatly missed. https://t.co/vLigw63DHK
