The story is well documented: boy starts cooking at the age of ten, serving neighbours and friends in his family’s living room, while cooking and sleeping in the kitchen. Aged 19, boy opens an acclaimed restaurant in Manhattan and firmly establishes himself as one of America’s leading chefs. He is even called the ‘Justin Bieber of food’.

It seems hard to believe, but Pieter Estersohn’s career as a working photographer began with failing a class on the subject at university, and then almost came to an abrupt end again, when his mother assumed a call from British Vogue offering the budding practitioner his first assignment must be a prank. Thankfully, neither mishap stymied Estersohn’s endless curiosity and enthusiasm for finding and working on the next great story.

‘Comets in the peopled New York sky. Flashing on their own trajectory, they leave a trail of sparks behind,’ was how Vogue’s Polly Devlin described Ahmet and Mica Ertegün in her 1969 profile on the couple and their townhouse in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Although, as was the custom in those days, Devlin referred to the couple’s home as ‘the Ahmet Ertegün town house’, in truth, their home was very much all about Mica.

During the 20 years I spent as photography director of US Vogue, one story about Irving Penn (1917–2009) sticks in my mind. It was relayed to me by an assistant to one of the magazine’s editors who worked closely with Penn. This was during the final decade of the photographer’s career, when he was already well into his eighties.
