The Philippine national rowing team emerged with two medals in the 66th International Ratzeburg Regatta in Germany recently. Southeast Asian (SEA) Games bronze medalists Edgar Ilas and Zuriel Sumintac kicked off their European tour with a silver medal in the men’s pairs lightweight event of this prestigious international event. On the other hand, Kristine Paraon and Feiza Lenton clinched the women’s doubles sculls bronze medal to make it a double treat for Filipino rowers.

The Philippine national women's football team fell to Chinese Taipei, 0-1, in their friendly match at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium Tuesday evening. Saki Matsunaga was the lone scorer of the game after scoring a tap-in goal in the 28th minute for the Taiwanese. Veterans Sarina Bolden, Quinley Quezada, and Katrina Guillou were absent in this match due to injuries. The Filipinas are using this match as a build-up for the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in Cambodia starting on 29 June.

Alex Eala and Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland were booted out in the women's doubles of the Birmingham Open in the United Kingdom Monday evening (Manila time) after a 4-6, 4-6 loss against the Australian pair of Ellen Perez and Storm Hunter in the Round of 16. The Filipino-Swiss tandem fought hard for one hour and 11 minutes but was outclassed by the Aussie pair. It was Eala's first match in the grass court for this year.

Alex Eala starts her grass court campaign as she competes as the No. 3 seed in the women’s singles of the Birmingham Classic in the United Kingdom. Eala, 20, starts her campaign on Tuesday against Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic in the Round of 32. At press time, the three-time Junior Grand Slam champion is competing in the women’s doubles with Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland as they take the Australian pair of Ellen Perez and Storm Hunter in the Round of 16.

Ernest John Obiena completed a three-peat in the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea after winning the men’s pole vault event late Saturday. Obiena, 29, had to face off against training partner Huang Bokai of China to get a jump-off after they tallied 5.72m. The Italy-based Obiena did 5.77m while Bokai failed, giving the gold medal to the Tondo-born vaulter. Patsapong Amsamarng of Thailand completed the podium cast after posting a personal best of 5.67m.
