MCC’s head of ticketing at Lord’s has been sacked for handing out tickets to leading matches for personal gain. A club statement sent to the 18,500 members, after an investigation involving external solicitors, revealed that Simon Wakefield had been dismissed “on grounds of gross misconduct” and had admitted the allegations. The club spotted anomalies in records in March for major matches, which generally refers to international cricket and hence the most expensive seats in the ground.

Glamorgan missed out on breaking the world record for a fourth-innings run chase after a one-handed catch by a gloveless wicketkeeper meant their match against Gloucestershire ended in a dramatic tie — the first in a County Championship game for six years (Elizabeth Ammon writes). He does not seem quite the type to frequent The Den. “I see things I don’t see at Eastbourne or the Utilita Bowl,” Orr says of the southeast London stadium which is renowned for its, ahem, passionate supporters. “I look at a fan and think, ‘He’s an ultra’.

The one specialist cricketing role that could be said to have regressed over the past decade is that of the wicketkeeper. The sad death of Derek Underwood was poignant in that he was coupled inextricably with the greatest of them all, Alan Knott. Their county, Kent, was once a kind of nursery for glovemen. Now, as emphasised by the emerging talent of George Bell and Matthew Hurst, these skills are increasingly being honed in the north of England, in Lancashire.

When Nathan Lyon arrived at Old Trafford for his relatively short stay with Lancashire he made his intentions quite clear. He was not, he declared, planning to take Tom Hartley’s place. Unfortunately, however, that was exactly what occurred in his first proper appearance after his debut against Surrey last week was spoiled by the weather. The emerging England spinner was restricted to a walk-on part as 12th man.
