Peru’s former First Lady Nadine Heredia has fled to Brazil, where she has been granted diplomatic asylum after a court in her home country sentenced her and her husband, former President Ollanta Humala, to 15 years in prison on money laundering charges. She landed in the capital Brasilia with her son on Wednesday, her lawyer Julio Espinoza told CNN. According to the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, she had requested asylum at the Brazilian Embassy in Lima on Tuesday morning.

CNN — Peru’s former First Lady Nadine Heredia requested asylum at the Brazilian Embassy in Lima on Tuesday, the same day she and her husband, former President Ollanta Humala, were sentenced to 15 years in prison on money laundering charges. The embassy informed Peru that Heredia had arrived Tuesday morning, according to a statement from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry. It’s unclear if she entered the facility before or after the sentence was announced by the Peruvian Judiciary.

CNN — Un científico italiano fue encontrado muerto en Colombia, según las autoridades locales, tras el hallazgo de varios fragmentos de un cuerpo en un sendero de la ciudad costera de Santa Marta el domingo. La policía municipal indicó que su investigación reveló que un brazalete hallado en los restos pertenecía a Alessandro Coatti, un biólogo que recientemente había emprendido un viaje por Sudamérica. Posteriormente se encontraron más restos en otros dos lugares de la ciudad.

CNN — An Italian scientist has been found dead in Colombia, according to local authorities, after several pieces of a human body were discovered lying on a path in the coastal city of Santa Marta on Sunday. City police said their investigation showed that a bracelet found on the remains belonged to Alessandro Coatti, a biologist who had recently embarked on a trip through South America. More remains were later found at two other locations around the city.
