Continuing our coverage of athletic achievements at the Wyoming State Track and Field Championships, here are some field event standouts. The Casper Star-Tribune reports Kavin Hoff of Natrona County High School set the overall record in the pole vault, launching 16-1. Kemmerer's Laynee Walker cleared 11-2 in the same event to set a new Class 2A standard. She’s now the three-time defending 2A champion in pole vault and won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles the past two years.

According to the Wyoming Historical Society, on June 1, 1889, the premier edition of the Big Horn Rustler newspaper, edited by Joe DeBarthe, was published at the Bonanza oil camp southwest of Hyattville. It was at the confluence of Paintrock Creek and the Nowood River. On June 1, 1909, Pathfinder dam was completed. On June 1, 1933, the first Wyoming Highway Patrol officer, Capt. George Smith, assumed his duties.

WyoPreps reports Star Valley's Jase Burton broke the overall record in the 3200 meters with a time 9:16.08. Lyla Marney of Big Horn set the 2A record in the same distance, clocking in at 11:22.75. According to the Casper Star-Tribune, the Sheridan boys set the new 4X400 relay state record in 3 minutes, 18.63 seconds. The Natrona County girls' 4x100 relay team raced their way to a record time of 47.81 seconds.

A Sheridan 12-year-old is the local senior center’s youngest volunteer. The Sheridan Press reports Lucien Simurdak joined his grandmother as she volunteered at The Hub on Smith when he was only nine years old. He’s now twelve and knows the food delivery route by heart. He hopes to keep the youngest volunteer title for as long as he can. The Bridger-Teton National Forest recently performed some prescribed burns with a unique tool.

A new film tells the success story of the Red Desert pronghorn. WyoFile reports roughly 43% of the herd was killed by the winter of 2022-23. But the die off led to research and a project that replaced 23 miles of fence with wildlife-friendly fencing. Filmmaker Patrick Rodgers documented the grassroots effort to help the herd recover. He says the film is a feel-good, successful conservation outcome that matches the character of the pronghorn.
