For the past 2 Octobers, I’ve driven past a giant clown on a billboard, red-haired and bloody-faced. This year though, I got to actually see the clown in person, and I had an amazing time. Indy Scream Park is in a perfect range of scary. It elicited plenty of genuine screams, but won’t induce chronic nightmares or heart attacks.

Following the 2024 presidential debate on Sept. 10, Taylor Swift took to Instagram to post an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift said. Swift’s post received more than 2.3 million likes in a half hour and drove over 400,000 voters to vote.gov, according to an article by Forbes.

Highlighting the “Speech” in Speech and Debate, Speech event co-head senior Grace Nie and coach Emily Bell discuss the team’s characteristics and initiatives. Speech was reintroduced in 2022, according to Nie. “Speech is still relatively new, so it’s been very fulfilling trying to build it from the ground up,” she said.

Public speaking anxiety, or glossophobia, affects about 40% of the population according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The prevalence of this fear is also a large reason why students might be hesitant to join Speech and Debate, Executive Director and senior Feryal Haider said. “To stand up and advocate for yourself against another person can be daunting,” Haider said.
