The fact that Donald Trump’s rapacious musings about Canada becoming “the 51st state” overlapped with the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week had some pundits looking for a link. Several settled on the notion that Trudeau had in some way invited the annexation overtures; that the prime minister’s supposedly “postnational” Liberal administration had created a country so devoid of identity and prideMany cited a recent Angus Reid poll documenting a slump in patriotism.

If there’s one quote Justin Trudeau gets an unfair amount of flack for, it’s this one he gave to The New York TimesMagazine’s Guy Lawson in 2015:[Justin Trudeau’s] embrace of a pan-cultural heritage makes him an avatar of his father’s vision. “There is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada,” he claimed. “There are shared values — openness, respect, compassion, willingness to work hard, to be there for each other, to search for equality and justice.

In a recent video, I described Canada as being ruled by a “necrocracy,” or government by the dead, given our prime minister has such rock-bottom numbers it’s inconceivable he’ll be re-elected to another term. Situations like these invite partisan jeering, since the desperation of an administration with one foot in the grave can be deeply pathetic — Prime Minister Trudeau’s $250 handouts, for instance.

In the lead up to the 2020 presidential election I made a video documenting a phenomenon I’ve been tracking for about two decades: election-predicting portents with a record of 100% accuracy.

I think it’s important to hold pundits — which is to say, professional current affairs commentators (who may or may not be journalists) — accountable for their accuracy. A while ago I created two pretty extensive timelines of pundit narratives, one about Donald Trump’s first year in office, the other about the 2020 presidential election campaign. They document plenty of sensible takes and insightful analysis — even some strikingly spot-on predictions.

Conventional wisdom on Canadian immigration policy has been shifting so quickly in recent years it can be hard to keep up. Here’s my best attempt at a succinct summary of the narratives that have defined the topic since the mid 2000s or so. During the conservative prime ministership of Stephen Harper (2006-2015) annual immigration rates rose gradually but consistently. His first full year in office welcomed 236,758 new permanent residents; by his last year that number had risen to 271,845.

The other day, I gave my picks for my five favorite YouTube videos of 2023. As a follow up, I thought it might be fun to ask the YouTubers who made those five videos what their top picks of 2023 were. KB: “Plagiarism in the Youtube education space has been a growing issue on the platform for years. While some creators will spend months diving into a topic, others will simply quote Wikipedia at you.
