When The Passion of the Christ was released 21 years ago, Hollywood critics mocked it because it offered a realistic depiction of Jesus’ torture and death. I know people who couldn’t watch the movie because it offered such an accurate portrayal of a brutal Roman execution. Actor Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in that film, was only pretending to feel pain when he was flogged and nailed to a cross. But the unimaginable agony Jesus endured at Calvary was real.

Paul said of Onesiphorus: “He often refreshed me …” (2 Tim. 1:16). Can you imagine refreshing Paul? He was a great leader, but he had bad days—and he needed support! Don’t hide your weaknesses just because you are a leader. Let people see how a Christian faces trials.

The apostle Paul warned the Ephesians: “Do not give the devil an opportunity” (NASB). The Greek word for “opportunity” is “topos,” which can mean “occupancy in a home.” Our enemy seeks a place in our hearts where he can hide. Don’t give him the key!
