The latest jobs data shows Tasmanians are hurting under a weak minority Liberal Government. More jobs have been lost since Premier Rockliff took his government into minority than were lost during COVID. According to the ABS 8,700 full-time jobs have vanished since the Premier lost control of the Parliament in May 2023, with 1000 of those lost in the last two months alone.

Ambitious Minister Eric Abetz is sharpening his knife in plain sight after Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s latest display of weakness regarding Leonie Hiscutt. Yesterday, one Abetz’s acolytes Brendan Blomeley was damning in his assessment of the Premier. “He’s weak, and he is pathetic, and he needs to go,” Mr Blomeley said. There’s no way he would have been so forthright if Mr Abetz didn’t want him to be.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s desperate response to the criticisms of his leadership coming from all sides of politics confirms just how weak he’s become. Instead of tackling the issue head on, the Premier misleadingly tried to blame Labor for his own brewing internal turmoil. Not once has Labor attacked Leonie Hiscutt’s right to support her son – good luck to them.

Premier Rockliff’s weakness has reached an extraordinary new level after it was revealed he has failed to step in despite his Leader of Government Business, Leonie Hiscutt, openly defying party rules to campaign against the Liberals in the upcoming Montgomery election. According to the Liberal Party’s constitution, Ms Hiscutt’s clear breach means she has automatically ceased to be a member of the party.

TasCorp revealed in December that a full review of TT-Line’s finances was underway amid rising debt levels brought on by the biggest infrastructure stuff-up in Tasmanian history, the Spirits fiasco. It was also confirmed during Government Business Enterprise hearings that TT-Line had been operating in breach of their debt agreement with TasCorp for more than six months and were on track to exceed their current borrowing limit of $1 billion.
