INTRODUCTION This article explores narratives that circulate about borderline personality disorder1 (BPD) in health-care settings and, importantly, what these narratives do. Drawing from the work of Frank (2010), we examine how narratives concerning BPD have certain capacities and interrogate how these narratives shape practices of care. BPD is a highly contentious mental health diagnosis.

Placing the increased usage of chatbot apps such as Woebot in the context of enduring problems in the mental health system that were worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, the article explains that young people are seeking artificial intelligence chatbots to support their mental health challenges.
