    Here’s what I think. Harvard is probably the greatest university in the world. The best and brightest youth throughout the world dream of graduating from Harvard. Many foreign students remain in the U.S. after graduation and make important contributions to our nation. Those who return to their own country are regarded with great respect and they usually speak well of their experience here – a powerful form of U.S. soft power in the world.

    It is increasingly clear that our democracy is threatened by Donald Trump’s strong desire to become a dictator, enabled by his spineless Republican sycophants. But few clearly realize how his use of “emergency declarations” might achieve this end. Let’s review the “emergencies” that stampeded other countries into giving a leader dictatorial power. Of course, Hitler and the Reichstag fire should come to everyone’s mind. It’s almost certain that the fire was set by Nazis to assist the power grab.

    Government economic policies can reverse national fortunes. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Japan ate our lunch. Then their government made mistakes and we pulled ahead. The European Union used to be our equal. Then like Japan, governance errors were made and the EU’s growth slowed and we pulled ahead of them, too. Now we have embarked on a program that will reverse our economy’s path, and your children may suffer due to it—just like the Japanese and Europeans suffered.

    Last week we looked at something new in the second Trump presidency, the unashamed pursuit of gain by a sitting president. Today, let’s look more deeply at the in-your-face financial grifting on a scale we’ve never seen before. The latest hustle is the president’s enthusiastic support for digital currencies like the famous Bitcoin. These currencies have historically been associated with money laundering, illegal payoffs, and other unsavory rackets.

    Many presidents don’t know history. Most normal presidents would ask for experts to guide them forward. Not Mr. Trump. He claims that he is a universal genius not needing advice; that his innate insights are sufficient. They’re not. Let’s look at just two of his comments in the Rose Garden when he announced Liberation Day from “unfair” tariffs, including the tariffs he himself passed. He began properly lamenting our huge national debt of $36T and rising.
