An FAA spokesperson told FLYING that “safety-critical” positions such as air traffic controllers remain exempt from the deferred resignation program (DRP) offered by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which The Wall Street Journal on Thursday reported has been taken by more than 1,200 employees.

Toyota Motor Corp. is doubling down on its commitment to electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxis. Per an SEC filing, the automaker last week finalized a $250 million investment in air taxi developer Joby Aviation—the first of two equal tranches totaling $500 million, announced in October. According to Joby, the funding will support certification and commercial production of its flagship model, which is designed to carry up to four passengers at speeds approaching 174 knots.

The ninth integrated test flight of SpaceX’s Starship rocket and Super Heavy booster avoided previous issues but encountered new ones as the company aims to ramp up launches this year. Let’s begin with the good. Flight 9 marked the first time SpaceX used a previously flown Super Heavy booster, which was caught back at the launch pad by a pair of giant metal chopsticks in January and refurbished for Tuesday’s mission.

Wing, the drone delivery arm of Google parent Alphabet, and rival Flytrex are making history. In Texas, the competitors have become collaborators. The partners on Wednesday revealed they are operating daily service in overlapping airspace near Dallas—the first such operations in the U.S.As of April, more than 420,000 commercial drones have been registered with the FAA by uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) operators. Several of them deliver in the Dallas area, including industry titan Zipline.

SpaceX’s colossal Starship rocket and Super Heavy booster are poised to return to action Tuesday evening after the company wrapped up its investigation into the 400-foot-tall vehicle’s eighth test flight in March. Starship exploded during both that mission and Flight 7 in January. The FAA issued a vehicle return to flight determination for Starship on Friday, clearing the path for Flight 9 — its third in an upgraded Block 2 configuration and first to feature a previously flown Super Heavy booster.
