A former bishop of the Diocese of Broome, Australia, who faces sexual abuse and assault charges, pleaded guilty on Monday to seven firearm-related charges. Bishop Christopher Saunders, 75, pleaded guilty at Broome Magistrate Court June 16 to six charges of inadequately storing ammunition and firearms, as well as one count of possessing ammunition without a license.

Billboards for a Culvers, Chuck E Cheese, and weed dispensary mark the exit ramp for the start of a very different kind of papal pilgrimage. I eased my car off I-57 and navigated my way through the streets of the Windy City’s South Side, searching for a small brick house with a red door. Like most other 1950 era homes, there is nothing remarkable about this house. Except that Pope Leo XIV grew up in it.

Attendees adorned in White Sox gear walked through the Rate Field concourse delicately balancing their Chicago dogs and soda. Some slowed to look at the guy wearing full bishop’s regalia; others stopped at Section 140, where a line had formed. These fans were not here to watch the Sox lose yet another game, but to celebrate their city’s new hometown hero: Leo XIV, the pope from the South Side.

This year’s National Eucharistic Pilgrimage started out quietly enough. The pilgrimage began with a May 18 Mass of Thanksgiving to kick off the five-week trek from Indianapolis to Los Angeles. While last year’s National Eucharistic Pilgrimage included four different routes, coming from each coast of the country and converging in Indianapolis for the 10th National Eucharistic Congress, this year’s trek included just a single route, and drew less media attention than last year’s as it began.
