Scottish Widows has closed its Ethical fund following the strategy’s failure to meet its investment objective. The fund launched in 1994 and sat within the HBOS Specialised Investment Funds ICVC. It had £18m in assets and returned about 47% in the last three years, marginally below the peer group average. Given its lack of scale, the fund had been identified by Scottish Widows as one to merge away when the company unveiled plans to rationalise its fund range in March.

Abrdn’s head of absolute return Scott Smith has left the company after 18 years, Citywire has learned. Details surrounding his departure remain unclear, but it is believed that Smith has no immediate projects in sight. Smith was previously a portfolio manager on Abrdn’s flagship Global Absolute Return Strategies (Gars), which was folded into another multi-asset fund last year following a dramatic collapse in assets for a strategy that once oversaw more than £45bn.
