The 29-year-old will leave Red Bull at the end of the year after five seasons. Ricciardo, who has won seven grand prix, including victories in China and Monaco this year, felt it was time for a new challenge.

Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg were eighth and tenth respectively at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The results see the Enstone-based team extend their lead over fifth-placed Haas to ten points.

Kevin Magnussen finished sixth for the Banbury-prepared Haas team at the Australian Grand Prix. Enstone-based Renault also secured a top-ten spot, with Nico Hulkenberg seventh in a race won by Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas.

The Chipping Norton driver was forced to retire with eight minutes remaining of the half an hour race at the street circuit in Nuremburg, Germany.
