If the first rule of newsletters is: don’t put the words ‘European Union’ in the subject line, the second is: or ‘climate change’. Readers appreciate both are important, but they are also kind of a bureaucratic and technological drag. So please forgive me for that little bit of misdirection above. I promise to tread lightly. Kemi Badenoch is set to make a speech today in which she will call the government’s target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 a “fantasy” and “impossible”.

Tony Hsieh, the former chief executive of Zappos and fabled internet entrepreneur, was known for his killer job interview questions. One in particular struck a chord with me. Hsieh would ask candidates to name the biggest misperception that others had about them. After they answered, he would follow up with: “What’s the difference between perception and misperception?” I’m not sure I have a good response to this question, even with plentiful notice. What would yours be?

Foreign policy played a typically minor role in last year’s general election. This is for a few reasons. First, the UK is a middling power with an army scarcely capable of defending its homeland, let alone fighting a major war abroad. Second, Britain faces substantial domestic challenges, from near-record NHS waiting lists to overcrowded prisons. This on top of an economy that has failed to deliver meaningful increases in living standards for nearly two decades.
