There’s one quote in particular that’s always stuck with me – from the legendary Formula 1 commentator Murray Walker:“So you know what they say, those that can, do, those that can't, talk about it - and that's what I did.” It’s a spin on the old saying of ‘those that can, do; those that can’t, teach’ but it’s a brilliant quote, and it couldn’t be more accurate in my case. I was never any good at hurling or football growing up. And that’s putting it kindly. I was woeful. Playing senior?

While it was tit for tat in the early stages, Shandrum pulled clear at the end of the first half and finished comfortable winners over Éire Óg in the Premier 2 Feile Hurling final at MTU on Sunday. A dominant stretch from the seventh minute to the half-time break saw Shandrum score seven points unanswered, three of those coming from Charlie O’Mahony – who was phenomenal for the north Cork side all throughout. The first of those three scores drew parity, 0-3 apiece.

It went down to the wire, with Donagh Conway stepping up to send over the golden score and secure the Premier 1 Feile title for Ballinora, after a brilliant battle with Midleton in MTU on Sunday. Thirty minutes of hurling couldn’t separate the two teams. Ten more minutes of extra time couldn’t either. In the end it came down to golden score. Midleton won a free from throw in. Immediately they beckoned goalkeeper Will Stokes to come up and take it. It was a big ask from the halfway line.

Any doubts around the quality of this Tipperary side have been well and truly put to bed. And what a way to do it. The Premier ran riot in the first half in Ennis, hitting Clare for four goals in their victory on Saturday evening. Clare weren’t going to lie down after the first half battering. They came agonisingly close, but it wasn’t to be. All-Ireland champions, their season all but over. It could have been a very different story though.

Halfway through the Munster Senior Hurling Championship and each team has played two games. Cork are top, only ahead of Limerick on scoring difference. Waterford lie third with one win and one defeat, Clare and Tipperary are fourth and fifth, separated by scoring difference. Both teams are without a win. They face one another this evening in Ennis. The loser is almost certainly going to be eliminated – though that isn’t guaranteed.
