The tone for the Wyoming Track & Field Classic was set in the very first race Friday at Harry Geldien Stadium in Casper. Competing in the girls' 3200-meter run, Cheyenne East sophomore Maggie Madsen broke free from the pack early and steadily pulled away. As the distance between her and the rest of the field continued to grow, Madsen looked inward to keep pushing herself. "I knew I had a pretty good lead, so I just focused on breaking the school record," Madsen said.

Natrona County head coach Chris Stiers has been talking all season about how his team needed to work on "the little things."The Mustangs did that for 76 minutes Saturday against Green River at Cheney Alumni Field. Unfortunately for the home team, the Wolves did the right things in the final four minutes to escape with a 3-2 victory.

The Natrona County girls' soccer team flair for the dramatic continued Saturday. The Fillies scored two goals in the final five minutes at Cheney Alumni Field to salvage a 3-3 tie with Green River. On Tuesday, NC got a last-second goal from Jordan Best in the first half and, despite being a player down for the final 57 minutes, held on for a 1-1 tie in the Casper Cup.

Temperatures rose and records fell at the Wyoming Track & Field Classic on Friday. One day after athletes battled rain, wind and temperatures in the mid-40s at the KW Invite, most of the state's best track and field stars competed in the annual event -- the Track & Field Classic was revived in 2023 after a five-year absence -- at Kelly Walsh's Harry Geldien Stadium under sunny skies and temps in the mid-60s.

Three years ago, Brynn Sybrant succumbed to peer pressure. Sybrant, then a freshman at Natrona County High School, played volleyball during the fall and basketball in the winter for the Fillies, but her spring season was open.
