    The data analysis, produced by ADR Wales on behalf of WCPP, reveals significant barriers preventing equal access to tertiary education in Wales, most notably deprivation and economic background. Findings show:Learners eligible for free school meals are less than half as likely to progress to higher education (HE) (19%) than those not eligible (43%) and around 50% more likely not to be in tertiary education at all.

    On a cold and stormy day on campus, things were lightened up with the colorful energy of the Pride Pots Project. The project was started by Western Carolina University Art professor Heather Mae Erickson in 2021, and involves her traveling to different states to help participants paint pre-made clay bowls of different shapes and sizes. When a bowl is completed, it is given to the event leadership to be auctioned off to support a scholarship fund for underrepresented students in MFA programs at WCU.

    Everyone supports the idea of equality of opportunity in higher education, but what does it actually mean? That is what Wales’ new Commission for Tertiary Education and Research (CTER) will have to get to grips with. The body, which will fund, oversee and regulate all post-16 education in Wales as part of a new whole-system approach to post-compulsory education, will have a duty to promote equality of opportunity and to regulate providers to develop and deliver measurable improvements in it.
