Rainford High School Year 7 Boys also received a warm send off, with a guard of honour formed by the parents and supporters ahead of the Saints Women’s on-boarding onto the club coach. The school will be participating in The Steven Mullaney Memorial Match, sponsored by inspiresport – which is the curtain-raiser on Betfred Challenge Cup Finals Day, and they will be facing Sirius Academy West, from Hull.

First HalfThe hosts took the lead with the first chance of the game six minutes in. A Saints error inside our own half gifted the Robins field position, they used up a few tackles before going down the short-side on their left edge. Mikey Lewis found Kelepi Tanginoa, he offloaded to Jack Broadbent who scored in the corner. Arthur Mourgue converted, 6-0 Saints trailed. Five minutes later, they had a second try.

First HalfFour minutes in Saints had an opening. A loose pass on the last under the sticks found its way to Jack Welsby who put in a low kick which Huddersfield eventually put behind for a dropout down their right edge. The visitors did take the lead from the restart though. Saints used up their set and on the last tackle, Welsby threw a great cut-out pass to Tristan Sailor on the wing and he dove over in the corner to open the scoring.

First HalfWithin three minutes, we had a trip to the video referee. Tristan Sailor broke down the right wing and found George Whitby in support on his inside who raced towards the line and scored under the pressure. The try was given after a quick review and Whitby turned his four points into six with the conversion, 6-0 Saints led. First HalfLeeds took the lead four minutes in. They opted to go down their short-side on the left in midfield, Ash Handley moved forward and found Jack Sinfield in support on his inside who kicked into space behind the Saints defence and Riley Lumb scored. Lachie Miller couldn’t convert, 0-4 Saints trailed. They could’ve extended their lead ten minutes in. The Rhinos moved the ball from left to right, Miller tried a cut-out pass to Lumb but the ball sailed into touch.

First HalfWarrington had the first real opening. From a scrum in midfield, the hosts opted to kick directly from it through Marc Sneyd but Tristan Sailor beat Matty Ashton to the loose ball and conceded a dropout. The hosts did take the lead soon after though. Following a Saints error deep in our own half, Warrington went left from the scrum, Sneyd finding Toby King who beat a tackle and scored in the corner. Sneyd couldn’t convert, 4-0 Saints trailed. A second try followed.

The big talking point ahead of the game was whether Head Coach Paul Wellens would pick George Whitby to start after a stellar performance last week against Wakefield Trinity, and he did. Partnering Jack Welsby in the halves, the 18-year-old was making his fourth senior appearance of his career, in one of if not the biggest regular season round. Mark Percival also returned to selection in the centres, and Daryl Clark also did too but coming off the bench.
