RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A hiker experiencing heat related issues, including dehydration, had to be rescued at Hippie Hole in the Black Hills Friday afternoon. The rescue took four hours, according to a post by the Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department. Rescuers had to use a stretcher called a Stokes basket and several rope setups to get the patient out onto Highway 40 and to an ambulance. The hiker was taken to the hospital, but the person’s condition was not released.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Leo Plenty Arrows, a 36-year-old inmate at the state prison in Sioux Falls, has died. A release from the Department of Corrections stated that Plenty Arrows apparently died from suicide. Plenty Arrows was found unresponsive in his cell at the Jameson Annex to the South Dakota State Penitentiary on June 20. He was later pronounced dead at a Sioux Falls hospital. Plenty Arrows was serving a sentence for simple assault on law enforcement from Pennington County.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Federal charges have been filed following a June 12 stabbing attack at the Wounded Knee Cemetery parking lot on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Raymond Eagle Hawk Jr., 18 of Wounded Knee, is charged with assault with intent to commit murder. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. He pleaded not guilty in federal court Wednesday. According to a Department of Justice news release, Eagle Hawk was intoxicated and panhandling when the attack happened.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A Newcastle, Wyo., woman died Wednesday from injuries she sustained in a car-motorcycle crash Monday in Sturgis. At this time, the woman’s name has not been released. She had just gotten off the westbound Interstate 90 at exit 32 when her bike collided with a car traveling north on Junction Avenue, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. DPS did not say who was at fault, but did say the highway patrol is investigating the crash.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A 73-year-old man from Lead was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 14A in Deadwood. The crash victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family. According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the Lead man was driving a Honda Ridgeline westbound on Highway 14A near mile marker 40 when his vehicle crossed the center line and hit an eastbound Ford pickup. The 59-year-old pickup driver from Deadwood was not injured.
