BYD wants to become the biggest car brand in the world and has its eyes set on becoming the UK’s number one within just three years. That is according to one of the firm’s most senior British executives, who has pledged to put ‘profitable dealers’ at the heart of the brand’s plans. Steve Beattie, sales and marketing director of BYD UK, says that the the market in this country represents a major ‘opportunity’ for the Chinese brand, which currently has around 60 dealerships.

Used car sales reached record levels in the opening months of 2025 as dealers benefitted from increased levels of supply. That is according to fresh data from the SMMT which showed that a sky-high 2,020,990 vehicles changed hands on the second hand market in Q1. The figure marks a post-pandemic record for the opening quarter of a year with the four month window up 2.7% on the same point in 2024.

A Kent car dealer has been banned from running any company for more than a decade after he was found to have fraudulently claimed a Covid Bounce Back during the pandemic. Josesph Harrison, of South East Commercials Ltd has been disqualified from serving as a company director for 12 years, following an investigation by the Insolvency Service.

A ‘historic’ UK-US trade deal will save thousands of jobs in the car and steel industries which have been threatened by Donald Trump’s tariffs, Sir Keir Starmer said. The trade agreement was confirmed in a call between the Prime Minister and the US president which was broadcast live on both sides of the Atlantic. US import taxes which had threatened to cripple British high-end carmakers were cut from 27.5% to 10%, while the 25% tariff on steel has also been removed entirely.

The automotive industry has welcomed the UK’s ‘historic’ trade deal with the US which has seen controversial tariffs slashed on cars exported to the UK. The landmark agreement was confirmed in a call between the Prime Minister and the US president which was broadcast live on both sides of the Atlantic yesterday afternoon (May 8).
