    Montreal will play host to Canadian Grand Prix until at least 2035, officials announced Tuesday. The announcement extends the contract with Formula One. The race was previously under contract through 2031. An agreement signed until 2029 was extended two years after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the 2020 and 2021 editions. The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix will be held May 22 to 24, weeks earlier than usual, according to the official schedule released last week.

    The National Assembly needs voices that aren’t nationalist, the newly acclaimed leader of the Canadian Party of Quebec says. The federalist, minority-rights-focused party unanimously acclaimed Joe Cianflone as its new leader Saturday at a convention in Pointe-Claire — and voted in resolutions supportive of splitting Quebec in two. Cianflone officially replaces Colin Standish, who stepped down as leader in February.

    Montrealers’ morning commutes were delayed Monday as STM maintenance workers began a nine-day strike. The network was shut down throughout the early morning, with bus service only resuming at 6:15 a.m. and métro service at 6:30 a.m. Public transit will return to a standstill at the end of the morning rush hour, resuming again for a few hours in the afternoon. Monday’s action is the first strike since 2007 to impact STM service.

    Canadian authorities have returned more than 1,600 asylum seekers to the United States in 2025 without hearing their case for refugee protection, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). Many have landed in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. The removals are a product of the longstanding Safe Third Country Agreement, which requires anyone seeking refugee protection in Canada or the U.S. to claim asylum in the first of the two countries they reach.
