The Winston-Salem Police Department has upgraded the charges against Bertrand Christopher Gray Jr. in connection with the assault of a man in an elevator at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel on West Fourth Street over the weekend. Gray, 41, is now charged with felony assault inflicting serious injury and felony first-degree kidnapping. The department said it came to this conclusion after further investigation and consultation with Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill.

'Every job is essential': Samaritan Ministries needs summer volunteers

As people go on vacations and college students go home for the summer months, Samaritan Ministries in Winston-Salem is losing critical volunteers. Its Soup Kitchen operates seven days a week, 365 days a year, and provides more than 300 meals each day to guests. In 2024, they served a total of 128,469 meals. Samaritan Ministries also provides dinners to those staying in their shelter, which has been at capacity most of this spring.
