CREATORS The opening scene of the 1996 movie “Twister” is unforgettable. It’s 1969, and a family and their dog rush into their home’s tornado shelter right as the F5 tornado makes its way through the neighborhood. A young Jo Harding (the main character whose older version is played by Helen Hunt) can only watch in fear as her father desperately holds the shelter’s door shut from the battering winds. Suddenly, the door is wrenched open.

CREATORS “Accounting” brings to mind many things. Excel spreadsheets with lines of various dollar amounts and complex formulas. Isolated, sometimes stressful workspaces housed in cubicles. Articles or academic papers featuring complicated or confusing tax codes. Sue Yang, assistant professor of accounting at the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University, is hoping people’s understanding of accounting will soon expand.

CREATORS The Heritage and Museum Sciences (HMS) program at Texas Tech University turned 50 years old in 2024. The program started in response to two key factors. The first was the museum field beginning to lean into collections management policy in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. The second was the American Association of Museums (now the American Alliance of Museums) creating an accreditation program to help support museums.

This year’s first-place winners were Mollie Green, a second-year animal and food sciences doctoral student in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources, and Kelly Elliott, a second-year kinesiology and sport management master’s student in the College of Arts & Sciences.

CREATORS It is the early 2000s. The anxiety of Y2K has waned, Carson Daly is still counting down the hits on MTV, and Angela Walla (then Angela Shaw) is in her sophomore year of college at Iowa State University. A pre-vet student, she has just wrapped up an internship at a local zoo and realizes veterinary medicine is not for her. “I went home and cried to my grandma,” Walla said, who was determined to become a veterinarian prior to the internship.

CREATORS For some, reading tea leaves is a practice of divination, interpreting patterns and shapes to predict the future or offer advice. Devi Khajishvili, a doctoral candidate in the Department of History in the College of Arts & Sciences, researches tea to uncover a small portion of the Soviet-era past of Georgia and to help re-establish the country’s modern identity. Devi was born in Georgia as the Soviet Union was dissolving in 1991.
