Robert Prevost has been elected the first North American pope and will be known as Pope Leo XIV. After he was unveiled as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, he spoke to huge crowds from the balcony of St Peter's Basilica. “Peace be with all of you'”, were his first words as pontiff. White smoke poured from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel shortly before 5pm on Thursday, signalling a new pope had been elected.

Black smoke again emerged from a chimney on the Sistine Chapel on Thursday indicating no pope has yet been elected in the biggest conclave in history. The red-hatted “princes of the Church” resumed voting after starting the heavily ritualised process of choosing a new leader for the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics on Wednesday. No new pope has been elected after three rounds of voting, two on Thurrsday and one on Wednesday. The result of a fourth vote is expected soon.
