LAS VEGAS — The victims of this week's mass shooting at UNLV were identified as faculty members who were gunned down by a man who had reportedly applied unsuccessfully for a professorship at the university. He was shot by police. The Clark County coroner said Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, a professor of management information systems at the university’s business school, and Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, an assistant professor in accounting, died of gunshot wounds.

LAS VEGAS — UNLV student Hunter Cain guarded the door of room 208, inside UNLV’s student union, after emergency alerts from university police lit up thousands of students’ phones across campus, telling them shots were fired and to “RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.”Eight minutes later, a second message reported an active shooter. At 12:20 p.m., another message reported shots fired in the student union.
