A country builder says the Cook government's decision to use so-called modular housing to address Western Australia's shortage of affordable housing fails to account for the lack of developed land. The government announced the low-deposit loans for modular housing, to be offered through state-owned lender Keystart, as part of a suite of housing measures ahead of tomorrow's state budget. But country business and community leaders say the homes will not be much use without land to put them on.

Indigenous corporation Karri Karrak says concerns were ignored about the World Surf League using a registered cultural heritage site. The surf league is using the site for bus parking for the Margaret River Pro event. The WA Aboriginal Affairs minister says all procedures and approvals were achieved. The Western Australian government is standing by its approval for a cultural heritage site to be used as overflow parking at the state's biggest surfing competition, the Margaret River Pro.

The West Australian government is being called upon to increase support for country ambulance centres amid fears volunteers are burnt out after years of fundraising for vehicle and substation upgrades. Volunteers in the South West town of Pemberton are working to raise $300,000 to replace one of their ambulances. Over the years such fundraisers have become commonplace to help buy expensive equipment and for major work at substations.

Australia's newly announced Eurovision contender, Go-Jo, has become the talk of his hometown, Manjimup, in country WA, with friends dubbing him one of the "biggest names to come out of Manji". Marty Zambotto, 29, known as Go-Jo, will represent Australia at the international song competition in Switzerland later this year. The news has delighted locals in Manjimup, about 300 kilometres south-east of Perth, where Go-Jo grew up "unapologetically himself".
