IntroductionAutism spectrum disorder (autism hereafter) is characterised by the early onset of differences in social communication and social interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). About 30% of autistic children do not develop functional language despite extensive interventions (Hampton & Kaiser, 2016; Oono et al., 2013; Tager-Flusberg & Kasari, 2013).
