    Construction on the $900-million Scotia Place is nine months underway, and the City of Calgary says it continues to be on time and on budget. Shoring and excavation is about 90 per cent complete and around 1,100 structural piles have been installed. “The substructure, ice rink, dressing rooms, back-of-house, food and beverage facilities—there’s a ton of stuff that goes in the first three levels,” said Robert Hunter, event centre project lead.

    At 73 years old, George Fernandez was still working as a security guard in downtown Calgary. “George’s motivation is his daughter. Giving her the best life she deserved. The life she wants.     A record number of people were turned away from Alberta shelters last year, according to a new report from the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS). Without a shelter, abuse survivor Denise Summers says things could have been much worse. “I don’t know if I’d be alive today if I hadn’t had that opportunity. It provided a safe place,” Summers said. “It was about 25 years ago, and I was in a very violent and very abusive marriage. My ex-husband had threatened to kill me and himself.
