Last spring, when I was searching for an anthropology senior thesis, I found a flier posted at Scripps College detailing a fully funded research project in Senegal, Africa, guided by a Scripps professor. We all know the difficulty of finding any internship, so when I finally received a “Congratulations” email, I did everything to ensure that I would get the most from the opportunity. What I know now, however, is that it was all a waste. Let’s go back to the beginning.

Every morning you get up and face the day. You prepare your bag, or your car, or your bike or whatever it is you need to get through the day. Usually, it’s a rushed morning. You are running around the house looking for your keys — which are hiding in the same place they always are — but your eyes are groggy and it takes you a couple tries to find them.

Happy two days post-Valentine’s Day to all my fellow single, lonely-heart readers. You made it! I mean this genuinely. This Wednesday, we survived all of the Instagram “I love you” stories, last-minute flower orders, happy couples, mail center packages and worst of all — public campus hand-holding. It seems Valentine’s Day is the one day when all public displays of affection become acceptable (even though they are not). Despite these gruesome scenes, you survived. We survived.

Laughter poured from Pomona College’s Allen Theatre last Tuesday, April 18, as students huddled into the packed room, finding seats in chairs or room on the floor, to see the Black Comic Cultures Stand-Up Showcase. With around 10 student performers, the event explored a variety of experiences through humor in a comfortable environment for student voices to flourish.

Music and activity boomed from Pitzer College’s McConnell Center Apron last week as art and food vendors invited students to experience communities beyond the classroom. The second annual Storyteller’s Festival last Thursday, April 13 at Pitzer was a collaborative event to invite students to participate in communities on and off campus through spoken word, music, film screenings, art and food.
