My last surviving grandmother was an incredibly independent woman. Her husband died when I was five years old and she was 58, and she never remarried, so to me it feels like she always lived alone. There were boyfriends, but never one Grandma Greta liked enough to invite in permanently. Maybe we should have been concerned about her being lonely, but we never were.
