A week before Idaho’s general deer season opener, a buddy and I were out elk hunting and I glassed up a decent 4-point buck skylined nearly five miles away. Being so passionate about mule deer and having such low densities of deer these days I always get excited when I see a buck so I instantly started scanning around for more. I picked out a few more just down the ridge but they ended up just being does.

In life I feel like there is little a son can do to repay his debt to his father. This year I was given the opportunity to try and repay that debt in some way when my Dad drew an elk tag in our home state of Arizona after nine years of applying. He quickly began shooting his bow as much as he could and walking/hiking to get in the best shape he could before his hunt started.

After a long nine months on the water commercial fishing, I was craving being back in the trees. I spent my fall long-line season daydreaming about future hunts. So, as soon as I was off the boat, I flew out to Cold Bay, Alaska to go hunting over Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, wind storms blocked us from caribou hunting or being able to do much exploring.

My archery elk season started the year before with underlying sorrow as the young friend who had founded our elk camp had passed away. It felt like the elk must have picked up on this as well, as they seemed to evade us at every turn. The season ended with a camp full of unfulfilled tags and wounded egos as we returned home with nothing but the memory of our friend.

It was May when I found myself in the middle of the “what hunts do you have planned for this fall” phone call. As I told my cousin Michael my fall plans he told me his and mentioned an OTC Archery Elk hunt with one of our buddies and invited me. I quickly said yes without asking too many details. After my wife gave me a “maybe” I quickly got online and bought the tag; I sent a screenshot to my buddies, there was no backing out now.
