Incoming Cal freshman Claire Weinstein did something few swimmers have done in a major event: She beat Katie Ledecky. Weinstein won the 200-meter freestyle at the USA Swimming national championship on Wednesday night in Indianapolis. Weinstein finished in a time of 1:54.92 to beat out 14-time Olympic medalist Ledecky and world record-holder Torri Huske. Weinstein was the No. 1 seed in the event so it was not a huge surprise, and Ledecky is better in the longer distances.

Cal added an under-the-radar player on Wednesday when the school announced that it has signed Georgia State transfer big man Dhiaukuei "DK" Manyiel Dut. The 7-foot Dut was scheduled to transfer to VMI last month but changed his mind and signed with Cal. Dut is a project, as big men often are, but he has three years of college eligibility remaining, and coach Mark Madsen hopes he can mold Dut into a formidable inside presence.

ESPN released its preseason Football Power Index (FPI) for the 2025 football season, and it did not paint an optimistic picture for Cal. It suggests Cal has virtually no chance to win the ACC title and absolutely no chance to win the 2025 national championships. But the FPI is not infallible as we will see later when we look at last year’s preseason FPI.

Cal snared a major commitment on Tuesday when four-star offensive lineman Tommy Tofi announced on social media that he has committed to Cal for the class of 2026. The 6-foot-6, 340-pound Tofi is a Bay Area product who attends Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco and is the brother of John Tofi Jr., who will be a freshman outside linebacker on Cal's football team this fall.
