Jackson Memorial defeated Pinelands 1-0 in the Ocean County Tournament softball championship. Senior Dominique Lopez scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The win marks the final Ocean County title for Jackson Memorial as the school merges with Jackson Liberty next year. JACKSON -- The Jackson Memorial softball team had nothing to lose going into the Ocean County Tournament championship game. And yet, the Jaguars wouldn't concede an inch to their opponent.

Several teams are vying for position in the middle of the rankings, with close competition and potential for upsets. While the month of May usually means that rain cancellations are a distant memory, the first Monday of the new month was a washout for games. And that pause made for the perfect time to revisit the latest ranking of the Shore's top softball teams.

Top-ranked Donovan Catholic defeated No. 2 Red Bank Catholic 4-2 in a key Shore Conference softball matchup. Donovan Catholic improved to 15-0, while Red Bank Catholic fell to 12-3. Outfielder Bella Maria made two diving catches for Donovan Catholic, including a crucial play in the fifth inning. RED BANK -- Although the calendar only recently turned to May, it was a playoff atmosphere on the softball diamond at Count Basie Park. The environment reflected of the gravity of the matchup.
