Earlier on Saturday, South Lake Tahoe residents were able to attend the winter operations open house, which is an event that showcases the city's new snow removal equipment. It also allows residents to learn more about snow removal operations, while giving kids the opportunity to get a close look at the equipment. The city says this also allows them to give residents a close look at where some of their tax dollars are going.

A new report from the Nevada Department of Public Safety shows that deadly crashes increased last year when compared to 2023, both statewide and in Washoe County. The report suggests that throughout Nevada, the leading cause of crashes were speeding and impaired driving. In 2024, 412 people in Nevada died as a result of a deadly crash which is an increase from 390 in 2023. Washoe County also saw an increase in 2024, with 52 deaths from deadly crashes which is an increase from 47 in 2023.

Ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area have gotten a good amount of snow over the last few days, and crews at Sierra At Tahoe are busy trying to safely open all of the runs. The risk of an avalanche happening is low, but it is early in the season, which means the landscape is constantly changing. With snow and rain mixing recently, there are icy layers being created under the powder, which can cause inconsistencies in the snowpack.

With Christmas less than two weeks away, USPS mail carriers are very busy. On Friday, we were able to get a close look at what it is like to be a mail carrier during the holiday season. The job is very fast-paced, and there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to help make sure mail and packages are delivered on time. We were able to follow Katie Simeroth, who has been working as a mail carrier in the Carson City area for over 10 years.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory is staying busy by monitoring aftershocks that are happening near Yerington following Monday's earthquake. Researchers from the lab say we are in the middle of an active earthquake sequence, so these smaller aftershocks are normal and could keep up for days or even weeks. However, the odds of a bigger earthquake than the 5.7 magnitude earthquake we experienced are low.
