I WAS STANDING OUTSIDE City College (CCNY) on 139th and Amsterdam with a small crowd, faced down by thirty or so cops, on the night of the big raids on both the Columbia and CCNY Palestine solidarity encampments. The area around the campus had been sealed off, and with the clearing of tents already underway, there wasn’t much we could do besides berate the police and let out cries of support for the detained students being hauled onto MTA buses.

I’m at the Outsider Art Fair in Manhattan, the world’s preeminent art fair dedicated to the sale (and, secondarily, the display) of outsider art since 1993. Sweaty, on a strangely muggy day in March, approaching the Metropolitan Pavilion in the wastes of the Flatiron district, I didn’t suspect that this building – squat, anonymous, appearing as a cross between a storage facility and an office – was my destination.

Taysir BatnijiDisruptions(Loose Joints, 2024) Hell, in painting, film, and literature, is often represented as a place one can go, with identifiable features and figures, its own topography and structure that one can traverse. But this misses something essential about the idea of absolute suffering.

How To with John Wilson, written and produced by John Wilson, ended its three-season run in July. There is a sign next to the Barclays Center that sends pinpricks of revulsion down my spine every time I see it. You know the one: “We Belong Here,” in pink, neon cursive script. Opened in 2012, Barclays famously displaced hundreds of neighborhood residents, drove out small business owners by raising property prices, and created a permanent traffic jam on Atlantic Avenue.
