AbstractNeuroscience is beginning to uncover the role of interoceptive feedback in perception, learning, and decision-making; however, the relation between spontaneous visceral and cognitive dynamics has received surprisingly little scrutiny. Here, we investigate how subjective, physiological, and behavioural indicators of arousal and attentional state vary as a function of cardiac activity and brain-heart coupling.

1. Introduction: Active Inference and Wishful ThinkingThe thoroughgoing conceptual motif in Karl Friston’s free-energy principle is self-evidencing—given the beliefs harnessed by an agent’s internal generative model, the agent selectively samples sensory data to maximise evidence for their own model.
