An opossum was safely escorted off the Mackinac Bridge by authorities. Opossums, native to North America, are often confused with possums, which are found in Australia. Both animals are nocturnal, arboreal, and omnivorous. The Mackinac Bridge connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, carrying commuters, tourists and, on occasion, furry animals such as an opossum crossing the bridge on May 29, the Mackinac County Sheriff's office confirmed.

A 57-year old Michigan woman from the Boyne City area was found dead May 27 in a Defiance, Ohio, park, authorities say. Kristin Bates, of Boyne City, who had been reported missing, was found dead around 8 p.m. on May 27, Detective Sgt. David J. Richards said in a news release from the Defiance Police Department.
