This week’s Black College Invitational Championship (BCIC) will bring historically Black college basketball back to Charlotte. The four-day tournament, held at Bojangles Coliseum, March 20-23, will feature 16 teams —eight men’s and eight women’s — from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

For Alexis Bibbs, his clothing company is more than a way to showcase his creativity; it is an opportunity to showcase the love he has for his alma mater, Johnson C. Smith University. Bibbs created the apparel brand Smiff Merch – derived from the HBCU’s name – in 2015. The brand consists of t-shirts, hoodies, jerseys and other paraphernalia centered around the culture of JCSU. His clothing ranges from streetwear to prep school styles, a range that Bibb says appeals to new students and alumni alike.

A group of Black churches has come together to address low academic performance by creating educational resource hubs for Charlotte’s students. The African-American Faith Alliance (AAFA) will launch a new year-round initiative that offers tutoring, mentorship and afterschool enrichment, among other resources, to students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

As a kid in the early 2000s, Al’lonzo Coleman said he didn’t have to go far to see some of his favorite basketball players. At Charlotte’s Grady Cole Center, he witnessed basketball stars like Muggsy Bogues, Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson, among others, who participated in the Charlotte Pro-Am, an annual summer basketball tournament featuring collegiate and professional stars with Charlotte ties.
