Re-sharing some introductory words I wrote last year …Hi Readers,I’m not quite sure I’m ready to sum up 2024 yet - but one thing I always enjoy at the end of each year is looking back at the books I read. (I use Goodreadsto track my reading each year and find it really helpful, with the caveat that I have to manually enter audiobooks and/or books I didn’t read via Kindle). This year (again), I wanted to share images of the books I read as well as a short sentence/blurb about them.

Novelist, essayist, intellectual, and activist James Baldwin (1924 - 1987) is renowned as one of the world’s most influential and prophetic voices of our time. His death in 1987 sent waves of grief around the world. Amiri Baraka’s eulogy, titled “Jimmy!”, spoke of James "Jimmy" Baldwin as “not only a writer, international literary figure” but as a “man, spirit, voice”. Baraka called Baldwin “God’s black revolutionary mouth” which speaks to Baldwin’s enduring legacy of radical truth-telling.

According to the group PEN America, more than 30 states have banned books by Black authors, including classics such as The Color Purple and The Autobiography of Malcolm X. The same group reports that “books about race, racism or that feature characters of color” make up 30% of the titles that are being banned. Banning a book does not make it illegal to own, but it creates hurdles when it comes to locating that book in neighborhood bookstores and libraries.

The nonprofit Visit Philadelphia, “the region’s official leisure tourism marketing agency,” has joined forces with Little Free Library to bring locals and tourists to the Little Free(dom) Library to celebrate Black History Month. According to Penn America, Black authors have been at a disadvantage when it comes to reaching a wide range of readers since over 30 states have removed certain books penned by Black authors.
