Boats run by criminal gangs. Refugees stuck in expensive hotels. It’s easy to see why many people want the government to stop illegal migration. As a retired Major General who runs one of Britain’s largest overseas charities, I can see a way to address the issue. Rather than pay billions to keep refugees in hotels, the UK could invest more in programmes to help people stay closer to their homes in safety. The HALO Trust was founded in Afghanistan in 1988.

In Ukraine, it’s not just the frontline that’s a minefield. The decision of the United States to offer landmines to Ukraine, a signatory of the landmine ban treaty, creates as much of a diplomatic minefield as a military one. Landmines are different from other weapons that have lethal effects at the moment of their use. In contrast, landmines kill and maim long after they were laid, harming not just soldiers, but civilians, many of whom are children.

A redoubt was built on Mr Clifford’s property on Thorndon Flat in anticipation of war in 1846. It was simply a square earthwork with a surrounding trench. All round the parapet were wood-framed loopholes for musket-fire. A more extensive work was constructed at the Te Aro end of the town as a place of refuge for the citizens. These were not the first field-works constructed in Wellington for protection against the Maoris.
