On Feb. 6, the Springfield Police Department held its annual awards ceremony for its officers and their families. One officer in particular was awarded twice. Kraig Akins, whose initial following and subsequent traffic stops ended in the fatal shooting of Stacy Kenny on March 31, 2019, was awarded both the Chief’s Award and, later, the Superior Tactics and Response, or “STAR,” Award.

“It is with profound sorrow that we at Stop the Sweeps mourn the untimely passing of a beloved community leader and tireless advocate for the unhoused, Eric Jackson, often known simply as Jackson and affectionately known to many as ‘Pineapple.’ At just 57 years old, Jackson’s life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to fight for those most targeted and oppressed by the systems that should protect us. On Oct. 21, over 200 community members came together for a “Free Palestine Rally and March” that started at the Federal Building. The march started about an hour later after a few speeches on the courthouse steps. A half hour into the march, as the crowd walked south on Pearl Ave, a white GMC Sierra 2500 pickup truck sporting multiple right-wing flags—including the Gadsden—suddenly pulled into the intersection of E. 8th Ave. and Pearl St., blocking the march.

Hi all,James here. First, I want to say what an incredible honor it has been to be the editor-in-chief for Double Sided Media these last two years. When I joined the team as its editor-at-large, I took on the responsibility with great pride and immediately started, and somehow completed, my first task: creating a style guide from nothing. In doing so, I—with lots of deliberation with Nadya—created one that I thought best represented the progressiveness and range of what DSM strived to be.
